The Stoor Worm, or Mester Stoor Worm, was a gigantic evil sea serpent in Orcadian folklore, capable of contaminating plants and destroying animals and humans with its putrid breath. It is probably an Orkney variant of the Norse Jormungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent, or world serpent, and has been described as a sea dragon.

Stoor worm

The stoor worm, or Mester Stoor Worm, was a gigantic evil sea serpent of Orcadian folklore. When the Stoor Worm was finally killed, as it died its teeth fell out to become the islands of Orkney, Shetland and the Faroes, and its body became Iceland. Stoor Worms are a colossal race of sentient sea serpents. They usually seek remote locations to inhabit since their movements underwater can cause such catastrophic effects for much smaller humanoid races nearby.

Assipattle and the Stoor Worm is an Orcadian folktale relating the battle between the eponymous hero and a gigantic sea serpent known as the stoor worm. The tale was preserved by 19th-century antiquarian Walter Traill Dennison, and retold by another Orcadian folklorist, Ernest Marwick, in a 20th-century version that integrates Dennisons texts with tidbits from other oral storytellers. They usually seek remote locations to inhabit since their movements underwater can cause such catastrophic effects for much smaller humanoid races nearby. They have one eye in the center of their foreheads. After death, their bodies deteriorate quickly and can form habitable islands of new fertile ground. Don't have an account?

It also bears a resemblance to the dragon from the story of Saint The Stoor Worm screamed and writhed in agony, smoke billowing from it’s mouth. Its tongue caught on the horns of the moon but slipped and fell, cleaving Norway and Sweden from Finland. It tossed and thrashed and with each throw of aguish teeth fell from its mouth, the first became the Orkney Isles, the second the Shetland Isles, and the last the Faroe Isles.
